What is the heart of your story?

Maybe you are halfway through writing a novel. And you’re stuck.

One reason may be that you don’t know what the heart of your story is.

Here’s a technique that might help.

Write the story down, what it’s about, a summary of the novel.

You might finish with five hundred words, or a thousand, it doesn’t matter. But when you’ve done it, take that summary and rewrite it, and cut the word count by half.

And then repeat, cutting down the word count by half again.

And keep going until you have about fifteen to twenty words.

That’s the heart of your story.
